The first registrations were allowed in September 2006, and the idea behind this domain extension is that all websites that use it are required to comply with certain restrictions. In other words, all .MOBI websites need to be built to be viewed properly by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” formulated by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in collaboration with the .MOBI Registry. These incorporate how a website is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The requirements have raised some concerns considering the fact that the TLD is the only one that specifies what devices has to be able to access a website and the way in which this must happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a site should be designed in such a way as to be viewed by most Internet browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
